Who is your favorite cartoon character?

Daily Writing Prompt – 2881

The 90s in Poland were a magical time. The Iron Curtain had fallen, but the dust from the Polish People’s Republic hadn’t settled yet. A nation starving for capitalist luxury threw itself at everything that smelled of the West. And what was the pinnacle of Western civilization for us back then? Japan. Yes, nobody cared that the Land of the Rising Sun lies in the Far East.

If a cartoon had dynamic animation, aired on an Italian channel, and wasn’t Russian, it automatically became synonymous with Western prosperity. It was right then, between commercials for laundry detergent and denture-cleaning tablets, that my teenage eyes first saw Gigi la Trottola. A dwarf, a psychopath, a sports genius, and probably the biggest fetishist in the history of public television. And you know what? To this day, he’s my favorite cartoon character.

Who on earth is Gigi? For those raised on safe, squeaky-clean Disney Channel shows: Gigi was no typical hero. He was maybe three feet tall with a hat on, had a giant head, and body proportions that defied any human anatomy. The plot of this masterpiece of Japanese animation was as simple as a plank. This microscopic fellow joins a high school basketball team. Sounds like a joke? It sure does. But Gigi, thanks to his superhuman jumping ability and total lack of shame, played two-meter-tall lanky guys like a fiddle. Later, because why not, he also took up ping-pong, fencing, and wrestling.

Nowadays, Gigi wouldn’t get his own show. At best, he’d get a court restraining order keeping him away from educational institutions. You see, our hero’s main driving motivation wasn’t a desire to win a gold medal, school pride, or a love for sports. No. Gigi was fueled by the sight of white women’s panties. The moment a girl in a skirt appeared on the horizon, his predator mode kicked in. Peeking under skirts, diving under benches, and even brazenly lifting up fabric – Gigi stopped at nothing. And once he caught sight of that mythical, white piece of fabric, it triggered an extreme surge of energy and strength. It was his own personal performance enhancer. He would fly into a frenzy of joy, becoming unbelievably confident and unstoppable to any opponent.

The main victim of his crude flirting was Anna – the embodiment of gentleness, who for some reason tolerated the presence of this little pervert. Interestingly, Gigi also had an archenemy. It wasn’t the captain of an opposing team, though. His biggest rival was Salomone – Anna’s talking dog, who was also in love with his owner and constantly plotted ways to get rid of the little runt. Does this sound healthy? Absolutely not. Was it watched with cheeks burning in anticipation? You bet. Nostalgia for uncensored times!

Watching it today, you wonder how on earth this ever passed through any form of parental guidance filters. Back in the 90s, though, nobody bothered with such nonsense. Gigi taught us kids from the block important life truths. It doesn’t matter if you’re three feet tall and everyone laughs at you – you can still be the king of life. Determination, even if backed by questionable morality, lets you move mountains. A dog can be smarter than you, and it’s worth keeping an eye on him.

Gigi la Trottola is a monument to unbridled, absurd Japanese imagination that hit the wild Polish capitalism of the 90s just right. And even though his pickup techniques qualify as a criminal offense today, to me, he will forever remain the king of the court and my funniest childhood memory.
